Anxiety is a common occurrence. It’s normal for people to have a little when they have to give a presentation at work.
For some people, it’s an issue regularly from worries that really don’t warrant it. Sadly, a true anxiety disorder affects over 19 percent of adults in the U.S.
While medication and therapy are often the first line of defense, acupuncture is a treatment you might not have thought about. I know it was one I never thought I’d be comfortable trying, but here I am, ready to tell you about my experience.
And if you’re looking for other methods to help with your anxiety and are either perimenopausal or menopausal, we offer hormone therapy for women in Littleton, CO, which will regulate your mood and decrease your anxiety.
Let go of your anxiety and feel mental clarity without fear and worry holding you back.
History of Acupuncture
I absolutely understand not wanting to get a new treatment. I’m hesitant and do plenty of homework before trying anything new.
But, interestingly enough, this isn’t a new treatment at all. It dates back to traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), originating 2,500 years ago. In Western medicine, it’s believed to boost the nervous system and activate your body’s ability to heal itself; in TCM, it’s thought to stimulate “Qi.” Pronounced “chee,” Qi is your body’s life energy. The Chinese believe that when it’s not flowing properly, dysfunction happens, which can affect you mentally, emotionally, or physically.
Through acupuncture, you open up the flow, and you then feel it healthwise.
How It Works for Anxiety
Acupuncture can help with sleep, anxiety, and dressing by calming your nervous system, taking it out of its high-alert state. Ultimately, it lessens cortisol production — a stress hormone that puts us in ‘fight or flight’ mode.
Depending on the acupuncture points where the doctor inserts the needles, it may even increase serotonin production — a neurotransmitter that gives you an overall sense of better well-being. It also stimulates gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA), which helps you feel relaxed.
It’s believed that this effect happens whenever the physician stimulates the vagus nerve, which runs the entire length of your body.
Science shows it has benefits as well. For instance, a 2021 meta-analysis showed the acupuncture group had better results than the control group. Plus, it’s been proven to be safe and doesn’t tend to cause many complications.
Benefits Besides Its Effects on Anxiety
While I used it for anxiety, it also has other benefits, such as the following:
- Lower back pain
- Fibromyalgia
- Irritable bowel syndrome
- Acid reflux
- Boosting your immune system
- Migraines
- Bloating
- Improved sleep
My Experience With Acupuncture for Anxiety
I can’t attest to any of the other benefits of acupuncture, but I can share my experience with it for anxiety.
Researched to Find a Reputable Practitioner
I did my homework and found a clinic nearby. He was a doctor of traditional Chinese medicine with page after page of positive reviews.
Had an Initial Evaluation
When I arrived, I didn’t know what to expect, but it went surprisingly well. After paperwork, the physician assessed my tongue, took my pulse, and even rubbed my hands and feet. I didn’t really understand why, but he explained it well.
Your tongue says a lot about the state of your internal organs. He evaluated all the following to gauge my health:
- Color
- Inflammation
- Shape
- Tip
- Root
- Body
- Moisture
- Coating
The pulse check threw me off a bit because the doctor looked at six different spots — three on each wrist. It checks for inflammation (if your pulse is fast), strength (a weak pulse may mean blood or Qi deficiency), and rhythm (an irregular pulse may mean emotional distress).
Moreover, the color, temperature, and degree of swelling in your extremities gauge circulation. The result was that I was more than a little weak and stressed.
Received the Treatment
It was then time for the treatment…
If you’re scared of needles, rest assured, this isn’t painful. Think of a needle for an injection or drawing blood. Now, reduce the size by quite a bit because these are much thinner than those.
They’re about the thickness of a piece of hair. Most people don’t really feel pain when they’re inserted. I know I didn’t notice much.
I didn’t need a gown because of where he placed the needles — in my stomach, head, legs, and arms, so I breathed a sigh of relief.
After the needles were placed, I was situated under two warming lamps that helped me feel relaxed while stimulating my Qi. This went on for about 20 minutes, which seemed longer, but it was worth it. I’ll explain in a second.
What Happened After Treatment
Not many instructions were given for aftercare, which was a good thing. I just had to avoid strenuous activity and stay hydrated.
I was told to choose foods that were room temperature or warmer, but I like a good sandwich with some coleslaw on the side, so I failed, but I tried and still continue to try.
Fortunately, I did feel more relaxed afterward and even got a better night’s sleep. Who would’ve thought that after motherhood, that was possible?
To be honest, I felt it actually worked, and I’ve been back since. I’m not sure if it’ll ever be all the time, but for now, going when I feel stressed is adequate.
